About Wollongong's Beaches

Wollongong has 17 beautiful beaches with popular North Wollongong Beach & South Wollongong Beach located along the City Centre's foreshore. A Free Gong Shuttle Bus operates in the City Centre with bus stops located close to both beaches.

North Wollongong Beach

Known as North Beach with the locals you can easily see why North Wollongong attracts the most amount of people along the coast. It has the most number of rock pools and is the best services and patrolled beach in the area. It’s also very accessible with car parks and good access tracks and bike paths. North Beach has good picnic facilities and many wading swimming pools that are ideal for smaller children the experience this stunning beach. With only 3-4 rips on the beach it’s a relatively safe beach to swim at. Surfers will enjoy waves up to 2m in height.

There is plenty of grass, shade and picnic booths, a children's playground is close by, shops, cafes and amentities are provided. North Wollongong Beach is a great place for a BBQ with full facilities provided, It also has a bike and walking track and free parking. Open All year and patrolled September to April.

South Wollongong Beach

The beach is also called City or South Beach by locals. Flagstaff Point marks the coastal centre of Wollongong. The original harbour is located on its northern side, the city spreads to the immediate west and the main Wollongong City Beach extends for 3.1 km to the south, terminating at a groyne located on the Port Kembla seawall.

The beach is backed by an extensive foreshore reserve containing from the north, the large Wollongong City SLSC, which includes a restaurant, then the showground, Lang Park football field and reserve, Wollongong Golf Course, the sewer treatment works and finally a seawall, which is backed by stockpiles of coal for adjacent Port Kembla harbour.

Twenty metre high Flagstaff Point also has parking and grassy parks, with additional parking, parks and picnic facilities around the surf club area. The beach is exposed to waves averaging 1.5 m.
